He then said he was going to marry her, and he did just that four years later.
Annette and Donnel dated throughout their college years and tied the knot on April 6, 1975.
They welcomed their first son, Joshua, in 1984, and later, in 1987 and 1991, their children, Jeremy and James, were welcomed into the family.
In 2015, they lost their son, Jeremy Carter, at the age of 28, to a heart attack.
