Career
Annie started her music career in 1962 as a singer in a rock group known as the “Guitar Brothers” after being noticed by French record producer and songwriter Claude Carrére.
At the age of 16, her parents signed a contract with Carrére for her. The agreement led to a collaboration that lasted for more than 20 years but ended in 1995, with a lawsuit on royalties, which she eventually won against her former producer.
She got her stage “Sheila” from the title of her first release, which was a French cover version of Tommy Roe’s “Sheila.”
Then, in 1962, she recorded her first big hit, “L’école est fine,” which means “School is over.”
She became an overnight sensation, achieving a record sales of 1.5 million. The song soon reached No.1 position in France.
In 1968, She recorded another hit song “Petite fille de Français moyens”. Wanting to reach the French teen music audience, Sheila revolutionized modernity by releasing “Les Femmes,” a 1976 song by Christine Charbonneau.
The song made her one of the top idols of French pop music, climbing to No.1 on the chart and staying that way for three months.
In 1977, she reached a larger audience by singing in English “Sheila and B. Devotion.”
She changed her style to disco music and had three male dancers known as the ” Black Devotion ” accompanying her routine.
These changes brought international success, as she recorded international hits with songs like “Spacer” (having over 5 million copies sold worldwide), “Singing in the Rain,” and “Love Me, Baby.”
The songs were produced by Chic, who, according to Sheila, “changed her way of working and singing.”
Due to a disagreement between her then French manager, Carrére, she had to leave France and move to New York, where she studied at the Actors Studio and started all over again.
In 1981, after her disco period, Sheila recorded the rock album “Little Darlin,” the title song took her back to the U.S Billboard Chart, hitting No.49 on the Hot 100 in 1982.
She met Yves Martin, who later became her husband in 1983. Martins is a composer and producer who directed three of her albums between 1983 and 1988. Her new songs were critically acclaimed.
However, she took a break from her music career between 1989 and 1998. Sheila wrote three successful books during the break, anchored her TV show, appeared in TV series, and made sculptures. In 1998, she had a successful comeback in music by CD compiling rerecording her hits alongside some new songs.
In one month, the sings went gold. The following year another album was released. In January 2011, Sheila’s album “Little Darlins was remastered and released in Japan on SHM-CD.
