She was born to Ivadine and Leland Long, both teachers in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA, on August 23, 1949.
Lee Long attended South Side High School in Fort Wayne; during her high school time, her exceptional performance in 1967 led her to win the National Forensic League’s National Championship in Original Oratory in 1967.
After high school, Shelly studied drama at Northwestern University but didn’t graduate because she dropped out to pursue an acting and modeling career.

Shelley’s first acting break happen in Chicago, where she began doing commercials and joined The Second City comedy troupe. She later began writing, producing, and co-hosting the television program, Sorting It Out on WMAQ-TV in 1975.
Her contribution and work on the show earned her three Regional Emmy Awards. Shelly also appeared in the V05 Shampoo print advertisements and commercials for Homemakers Furniture and Candy Soap in the1970s.
