Nicki Minaj canceled her Saudi Arabia Performance.
The star, Nicki Minaj confirms that she has canceled her performance scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia next week.
The rapper has taken the decision citing her support for women and the LGBT.
In the statement released to the media, she said;
After careful reflection I have decided to no longer move forward with my scheduled concert at Jeddah World Fest,” the rapper said.
“While I want nothing more than to bring my show to fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating myself on the issues, I believe it is important for me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expression.”
Nicki Minaj has been under scrutiny since it was announced she’s headlining the festival in Saudi Arabia.
Followers and human rights activist had urged her to cancel the performance citing the country’s human rights violations.
President and CEO of the US-based Human Rights Foundation, Thor Halvorssen wrote a letter to Nicki urging her to cancel the concert.
In the letter, he said;
“Your participation in a performance sponsored by a murderous, repressive regime involved in gross human rights violations, especially of women and sexual minorities, would be highly unfortunate.
Furthermore, it would be disastrous for a public figure of your standing who has articulated a commitment to education, women’s rights, and social justice.”
