John Mayer is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist who became famous for his soft rock music, earning several Grammy Awards.

John Clayton Mayer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on October 16, 1977, to Richard and Margaret Mayer.

His parents were both teachers. John’s love for blues began after listening to artists like Rush, B.B. King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Buddy Guy, and seeing Michael J. Fox’s guitar performance in Back to the Future.

He soon began taking guitar lessons from Al Ferrante, a local guitar shop owner.

However, John’s newfound hobby became a source of concern to his parents as he became consumed by it.

As a result, his parents took him twice to see a psychiatrist, but he was diagnosed as being sane in health.

After two years of practice, Mayer began playing in bars and other venues while in high school.

Subsequently, John became a member of the band “Villanova Junction, alongside Tim Procaccini, Joe Beleznay, and Rich Wolf.

At 17, he was hospitalized for cardiac dysrhythmia. According to him, the incident led to the songwriter’s birth as he wrote his first song the night he left the hospital.

In 1997 at 19 years, John enrolled at Berklee College of Music. However, after two semesters, he dropped out alongside his friend Clay Cook to pursue a music career.

Career

John and Clay moved to Atlanta, forming the short-lived band, the “LoFi Masters,” and began performing at local venues.

In 2000, after making an impressive appearance at the SXSW Music Festival, John was signed to Aware Records.

In 2001, he released the album “Room for Squares,” later followed by ” Heavier Things,” both albums were platinum and a commercial success recording several hits.

Room for Squares had hits like “No Such Thing,” “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” and “Why Georgia,” the album soon became multiplatinum, earning John a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

In 2003 for his single “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” His single “Daughters” from his second album also earned a Grammy award for the year’s song.

John later decided to broaden his scope of music by incorporating blues. In 2005, he teamed up with musicians like “Pink Palladino and Steve Jordan.” In 2006, John released his third studio album, “Continuum.”

The album was equally a success like the previous ones, receiving the Best Pop Album Grammy award.

In addition, his single “Waiting on the World to Change” from the album was a commercial hit, receiving a Grammy award, making him multiple Grammy winners.

This success was later followed by his fourth album in 2009, titled “Battle Studies,” despite the mixed criticism faced by the album, it nevertheless became a commercial success recording $45 million.

In 2011, John discovered he had a granuloma on his vocal cords and underwent extensive surgery; this development delayed the release of his fifth album “Born and Raised.”

After he recovered, the album was released in 2012, alongside his country-inspired “Paradise Valley.”

Subsequently, John formed the blues and rock band, the “John Mayer Trio,” He released the live album “Try!”, which was awarded a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album.

Around this time, he developed a strong interest in Grateful Dead’s music and later formed the touring band “Dead Company” alongside Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir in 2015.

In 2016, John released the single “Love on the Weekend,” this single became the lead singer of his seventh album, “The Search for Everything.”

On December 5, 2017, the famous singer was rushed to undergo an emergency appendectomy at a hospital in New Orleans.

After recovering, John released more songs that also recorded commercial success, the likes of “New Light,” “I Guess I Just Feel Like,” and ” Carry Me Away.”

On July 16, 2021, his eighth album, “Sob Rock,” was released with songs like “Last Train Home” “Shot In The Dark,” among others.

The Grammy award winner revealed that he had been super since 2016, following a 6-day hangover after attending Drake’s 30th birthday party.
