John Clayton Mayer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on October 16, 1977, to Richard and Margaret Mayer.
His parents were both teachers. John’s love for blues began after listening to artists like Rush, B.B. King, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Buddy Guy, and seeing Michael J. Fox’s guitar performance in Back to the Future.
He soon began taking guitar lessons from Al Ferrante, a local guitar shop owner.
However, John’s newfound hobby became a source of concern to his parents as he became consumed by it.
As a result, his parents took him twice to see a psychiatrist, but he was diagnosed as being sane in health.
After two years of practice, Mayer began playing in bars and other venues while in high school.

John and Clay moved to Atlanta, forming the short-lived band, the “LoFi Masters,” and began performing at local venues.
In 2000, after making an impressive appearance at the SXSW Music Festival, John was signed to Aware Records.
In 2001, he released the album “Room for Squares,” later followed by ” Heavier Things,” both albums were platinum and a commercial success recording several hits.
Room for Squares had hits like “No Such Thing,” “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” and “Why Georgia,” the album soon became multiplatinum, earning John a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
In 2003 for his single “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” His single “Daughters” from his second album also earned a Grammy award for the year’s song.
