His father was a Pentecostal minister, and his mother a beautician. Denzel attended the Pennington-Grimes Elementary School till 1968. Following his parents’ divorce, at age 14, he began engaging in street violence.
In a bid to discipline him, his mother sent him to Oakland Military Academy, as many of his friends were already involved in drugs, crime, and violence.
This decision by Lennis worked as the young actor completed his high school education and later enrolled in Fordham University, where he graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Drama and Journalism.
After working as a creative art director at a summer camp, Denzel realized his love for acting and decided to sharpen his talent by enrolling at the American Conservatory Theatre, San Francisco, for one year, before going back to New York.
