Williams was born on November 22, 1966. His mother is a Bahamian from Nassau and Booker T. Williams, an African American from Greeleyville, South Carolina.
Michael K Williams grew up in the Vanderveer Projects in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where he attended George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School.

After high school, he enrolled at the National Black Theatre in New York City.

Williams began his career as a dancer after quitting his job at Pfizer pharmaceutical as a temp.
Against his family’s wishes, he dropped out of school and resigned from his work to pursue a career as an actor.
The actor was intermittently homeless during this period and would often visit record labels and dance studios for work. He soon landed a job as a background dancer, and soon other jobs came in.
While dancing in music videos, he also toured with artists as well as modeled. In 1994, Williams choreographed “100% Pure Love” by Crystal Waters. His first acting role was alongside late American singer Tupac Shakur in the film “Bullet,” where he played “High Top.”
His hit role came in 2002, where he played the role of Omar Little in ” The Wire.”
He had a recurring role in seven episodes of the season, and his performance was met with good reviews, earning him an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, an award he, unfortunately, did not win.
Later on, he landed another recurring role on “Alias” and in “Six Degrees.” Williams has also guest-starred on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
In 2007, he was cast in “Gone, Baby, Gone,” playing Devin Amronklin. Later on, he made an appearance as Teddy in the “I Think I Love My Wife” while acting in films and series; Williams also starred in several music videos.
In 2009, he made an appearance in the film “The Road,” where he acted as a thief.
The following year 2010, he made another appearance in “Life During Wartime” and appeared in five seasons of “Broadwalk Empire, which aired from 2010 to 2014.
Later on, he landed a role on ” Chalky White,” playing the role of Albert. Williams became an executive producer on May 16, 2012, through the release of ” Snow on the Bluff,” which was the first film under his company, Freedom Productions.
In 2016, the talented actor became a host for the “Black Market.” His most recent work was in the 2020 HBO series, “Lovecraft Country,” where he played the role of Montrose Freeman.

Williams once revealed that he got his scar during an incident at queens when he was 25.
The late Hollywood actor got his scar after being smacked on the face with a razor. The razor was between the middle finger and the ring finger of the attacker during the incident.

Michael Kenneth Williams was found dead in his Williamsburg, Brooklyn penthouse by his nephew Dominic Dupont on September 6, 2021.
