Keisha Lance Bottoms was born on January 18, 1970.
She was born into the family of RnB singer-songwriter Major Lance and Sylvia Robinson.
Keisha was raised in Atlanta and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School.
She also attended Florida A&M University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications, majoring in broadcast journalism.
Subsequently, Keisha enrolled in Georgia State University College of Law, earning her J.D. degree in 1994.
Career
Keisha worked in a juvenile court as a prosecutor and also represented children.
She became a magistrate judge in Atlanta in 2002 and ran for a judgeship in 2008 on the Fulton Superior Court, but she was unsuccessful.
In 2009 and 2013, she was elected to Atlanta City Council, representing District 11 in southwest Atlanta.
She finished the service in 2017, and she was also made executive director of Atlanta Fulton County Recreation Authority from 2015.
In a runoff election, Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected in 2017 as the mayor after defeating Mary Norwood, a fellow City Council Member.
She is the 6th African American and the 2nd African American woman to ever serve as a major.
Her Investigation
Keisha was investigated during the election for not correctly reporting several lump payments to campaign staff, and the amount was over $180,000.
In October, she returned $25,700 and called on the attorney general of Georgia to investigate fake calls made in her name, which were ladened with racist overtones and done in Atlanta’s white neighborhoods.

Her Tenure as Mayor
During her tenure as mayor, Keisha declared that Atlanta was welcoming and would remain so to all.
She also signed policies, made initiatives and programs to improve the lives of LGBTQ Atlantans.
In addition, she created the LGBTQ advisory board in 2018, which included Miss Lawrence and Feroza Syed.
In 2020, Keisha was named permanent co-chair of the Democratic National Convention.
She also condemned those involved in the murder of George Floyd. Later on, in May 2021, Keisha announced she wouldn’t be running for reelection.
She was amongst the top four choices for the running mate of President Biden before Senator Kamala Harris was officially announced.
Biden and Harris then nominated her for a four-year term as the Civic Engagement and Voter Participation Vice-Chair at the Democratic National Committee.
A role that protected voting rights and expanded voters participation.
Personal Life
Keisha Lance married Derek W. Bottoms in 1994. They had met as students at Georgia State University College of Law during their first year and started a relationship soon after.
The couples’ attempt to conceive children proved abortive. They then adopted four children.
