Ghanaian traders shut down Nigerian traders shops in Accra
The Ghanaian traders yesterday closed their shops owned by Nigerian in Opera Square electronic market in Accra.
Some Nigerian traders were reportedly attacked during the incident by members of the Ghana Electrical Dealers Association.
This will be the second time in a month Nigerian traders are being attacked by the Ghana Electrical Dealers Association.
Ghanaian traders shut down Nigerian traders shops in Accra
The last time Nigerian traders were attacked, their shops were closed down for 48 hours. Ghanaian Parliament had insisted that foreigners must not be allowed to do retail business in the country.
Reacting to this, The President of the Ghana Electrical Dealers Association, Dr. Joseph Obeng said;
These foreign retailers have found a loophole in our retail laws and are capitalising on that.
We have failed as a country to preserve what to Ghanaians.
We will not sit down and watch them take over our market.
We don’t hate Nigerians.
We just want the laws to work
Ghanaian police however said they are doing their best to resolve the matter.
According to Chief Superintendent Kwasi Ofori, the Accra Regional Operations Officer of the Ghana Police, he said;
Measures have been put in place to ensure sanity prevails.
We have also invited both parties to work out the best ways to resolve the matter before it escalates
