Africa has chosen to change the narrative after years of being tagged consumers and not producers in automobile production.
Though automobiles can prove challenging, a few indigenous companies have taken it upon themselves to produce cars that can be used in Africa and other continents of the world.
Here is a list of the top 10 countries in Africa that manufacture cars.
- Advanced-Automotive-Design
Country: South Africa
It was founded by Brian Glover and Rhys Edwards in 1995. Two years after launching, they announced their first automobile called the Shaka Nyna.
The Shaka Nyna was launched commercially in 2000 but is only built by orders. Therefore, it is not usually seen in dealership stores.

- Bailey Edwards
Country: South Africa
The company was started in 2003 by Peter and Greg Bailey, two brothers who are top replica sports car manufacturers.
They customize and build high-performance cars like the Porsche 917 and Ferrari P4 for high-end clients worldwide.
One of its signature replicas is the Ford GT40 used in national and international racing tournaments.
The company also restored the Aston Martin DB6, notable for its use in the James Bond movie and sought by car collectors.
- Perana Performance Group
Country: South Africa
Also known as PPG, this company was launched in 2007 and specialized in converting cars like Escorts, Capris, and other ordinary cars into Saloon race cars.
The cars are notable for their high speeds and sleek lines. In 2009, Perana Performance Group launched its race car, called the Perena Z-One.
- Wallyscar
Country: Tunisia
Manufactured in La Marsa, Tunisia, and founded in 2006 by Zied Guiga. Wallyscar is known for its colorful, sporty, and environmentally friendly cars.
In 2014, the company sold over 600 cars each year, its market being Africa and the Middle East.
Wallyscar is said to be reliable, affordable with a powerful 4X4 production.

- Mobius Motors
Country: Kenya
The company was founded in 2010 by Joel Jackson and used simple design concepts to produce cheap and efficient vehicles with prices that can compete with the domination of second-hand cars in Africa.
- Laraki
Country: Morocco
They were founded by Abdeslam Laraki, a Casablanca businessman, in 1999.
Upon startup, the company manufactured just Yachts and then moved to the production of supercars in 2002, with its first luxurious supercar being Laraki Fulgura.
It followed suit with the next car, Borac, then Epitome.
The Laraki Epitome Concept was sold for $2 million in 2013, a befitting price for a V8 engine, 1100 Horsepower, and a 175mph speed.
Laraki’s are known as strictly concept cars and are custom-built for customers. They were ranked as one of the most expensive cars globally in 2015.
4.Kiira Motors Corporation
Country: Uganda
Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC), located in Uganda, produces hybrid electronic automobiles.
The company was launched by the engineering students of Makerere University in 2014 after they participated in the MIT student’s Vehicle Design Summit in 2006.
Kiira automotive industry marks a new dawn for Uganda; the most notable productions are the Kayyoola Solar Bus, Kiira EV POC, and the Kiira EV Smack, a five-seater sedan with a rechargeable battery that has a capacity of 40AH and 207V.
The first commercial edition was released in 2018.

- Kantanka Cars
Country: Ghana
Dr. Ing. Kwado Safo Kantanka founded the Ghana-based Automobile Company.
The company’s notable productions are the saloon, four-wheel drives, and SUVs assembled at the manufacturing plant in Gomoa, Mpota. The most popular of the SUVs are the Nkunimdie and Kantanka Opasuo.
In addition, the company publicly announced it is planning to produce electric cars by the end of 2020.
Kantanka Cars are already being used in Ghana and other African Countries.
- Innoson Motors
Country: Nigeria
Founded by Nigerian entrepreneur Innocent Chukwuma, the Innoson Manufacturing Company is the first of its kind in Nigeria.
Innoson is the first technology company to manufacture cars in Nigeria and has produced about 500 cars, ranging from 1.5 – 3.5 million naira.
They assemble various cars in their plant located at Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria.
Due to the various range of cars being assembled, the company is constantly patronized by the Nigerian government.
Its most notable productions are the Innoson Umu, Innoson Fox, and Innoson G5. Innoson produces SUVs, Buses, and Pickup Vans, with some products already being used in Nigeria.
In addition, the company has expanded to counties like Ghana, Sierra Leone, Togo, Chad, and Niger.

- Birkin Cars
Country: South Africa
This automobile by South Africa was launched in 1982 and is one of the oldest car industries.
The Birkin car is sold in countries like Japan, the United States, and the European continent.
The cars are known for their quality and classic looks. One of their most notable productions is the CS3 Clubman Series, the SS3 Street Series, and the Lotus 7 Series 3.
In addition, the company is known to export its locally manufactured cars and limited edition car replicas around the world.
