Political career
He joined politics in 1992 under the Social Democratic Party of Nigeria (SDP) where Shehu Must Yar’Adua was their leader. He ran for the senatorial seat and was elected as a Nigerian senator in 1993 to represent the Lagos west constituency.
He became the chairman of Appropriation Finance, and Banking committee before the June 12 1993 elections annulment.
After the general election annulment, Tinubu and others founded a pro-democratic political group with the purpose of restoring democracy in Nigeria.
The pro-democratic group was a movement against the then head of state Gen. Sani Abacha. For the fear of his life, Tinubu went into exile in 1994 and came back after the death of the military dictator in 1998.
After returning back to Nigeria, he joined the politics and ran under the Alliance for Democaracy Party (ADP) for the gubernatorial position of the Lagos State.
He was elected and became the 12th governor of Lagos State, serving two terms concurrently from May 1999 – May 2007.

Apart from the children of the couple, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has children with other women.
In 1983, after spending nearly a decade in the USA, Bola Ahmed Tinubu moved back to Nigeria and started working with the oil and gas company Mobil Oil Nigeria as an auditor.
With hard work, Bola Ahmed Tinubu rose to the treasurer position and later became an executive of the company.
