He grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and underwent his primary and secondary education there.
He proceeded to study law at the University of Pennsylvania and was called to the bar in 1923.

Lewis soon became known in his hometown for being a seasoned lawyer.
In 1932, he became a House of Representatives member and served several terms before being elected Speaker of the House in 1934.
He soon began venturing into business, and by 1943, he had become the president of one of the largest coal-mining and transportation companies in the US.
This accomplishment made Lewis a very wealthy and influential businessman, and with his direction, the company was able to flourish.
He also oversaw several other companies and was a very respected man in Pennsylvania.
He soon decided to focus on his yacht business and spent years giving boat tours to wealthy people who visited the area.
Lewis was so successful that, in 1976, he was elected president of the Florida Yacht Club.
He controlled every aspect of the club, including handling meetings, promoting the business, assigning tasks, and every other aspect that helped the yacht club run smoothly.
Throughout his career, Lewis was known as a philanthropist, and he also carried out several donations in his name.

They were a happy couple for a while, and they welcomed a daughter together. However, they separated in 1932.
After the marriage with Katherine ended, Lewis went ahead and tied the knot with Elizabeth S. Carpenter, but they soon ended up getting a divorce.
In 1976, he met and married 20-year-old Aileen Wuornos after falling in love with her beauty.

Their wedding was announced in the local newspaper, and news about Aileen’s violent past and imprisonment for assault reached the neighborhood.
Weeks into their marriage, Aileen and Lewis were arguing, and she immediately resorted to violence by beating him up with his cane.
Fortunately, Lewis was able to survive the incident and immediately obtained a restraining order against her. Their union was annulled nine weeks after marriage.
