After school, Paul returned to Little Rock, where he started the nursery and garden design with his mother.
He also worked as a private tour guide for European gardens and taught garden seminars at the nursery.
In 1989, he got a weekly gardening segment on Little Rock television station KATV’s Daybreak.
Subsequently, he did a garden landscape for Gaston and Gloria Gibson, a Little Rock couple, who were impressed with his work and helped him launch a production company called “Hortus Ltd.
This eventually led to the syndicated program “P. Allen Smith’s Gardens,” established in 2000.
The program was shot at Paul’s home in Little Rock, and he later acquired a 650-acre Garden Home Retreat at Moss Mountain Farm in Roland, where he spent some time dividing his time between his two homes.
At Moss Mountain Farm, he focused on the local food movement, organic gardening, and preserving heritage poultry breeds.
The farm is open to the public on selected days and hosts events like weddings and other special events.
In addition, Smith launched the Heritage Poultry Conservancy in 2009, which is dedicated to preserving and supporting all domestic poultry breeds that are endangered.
He is also the author of P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home: Creating a Garden for Everyday Living, published by Clarkson Potter/Random House in 2003, and P. Allen Smith’s Colors for the Garden: Creating Compelling Color Themes, published by Clarkson Potter/Random House in 2005.
In 2009 and 2010, he published two more books titled Bringing the Garden Indoors: Containers, Crafts, and Bouquets for Every Room and P. Allen Smith’s Seasonal Recipes from the Garden.
He is a Certified Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society and a member of the Royal Oak Foundation and the National Trust of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland’s United States affiliate.
